Irrespective of the sector, India has long been facing a shortage of employment opportunities due to various reasons and the current COVID-led global economic slowdown elevated the crisis further. A high percentage of the youth is either unemployed or picking up jobs for which they are overqualified. One of the prime reasons for the situation is the skill gap and unavailability of vocational courses. Most of the offered educational courses prioritise theoretical learning and include insufficient practical training. To check this problem, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) was set up by the Government of India through the Ministry of Finance.
NSDC is a not-for-profit public limited company that aims at promoting skill development and vocational training in India. To achieve this, the organisation supports the conception of skilling and vocational training institutes. It also standardises the courses provided by various institutes to ensure the quality and uniformity of training and certification across the nation.
Currently, NSDC focuses on 37 sectors and provides relevant skill development courses with an aim to enhance the employability of job aspirants. There are over 10 thousand training centres associated with NSDC, spread across the nation and the organisation has led to around 2 lakh successful placements.
Along with skill development courses, NSDC also offers apprenticeship training programmes that include on-the-job practical training. Here, candidates get an opportunity to work with an establishment as a trainee and gain a better insight into the job responsibilities. Such apprenticeship training programmes are usually preceded by a short-term classroom learning course. For better reimbursement of apprenticeship opportunities, a dedicated portal has been designed under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS).
How can NSDC help you secure a promising job?
Pick the industry you want to establish your career in
NSDC is covering almost all the prominent employment sectors. Pick up the sector you want to build your professional career in. For some sectors such as agriculture, automobile, healthcare, telecom, textile, etc., dedicated sector skill councils are also there and work in partnership with NSDC.
Pick a relevant skill-training course
Consider your interest and aptitude while picking up a training course. Prefer courses that require your highest level of educational qualification.
Find the nearest training institute associated with NSDC
While many vocational training institutes are working in the country, prefer joining the one partnered with NSDC. Such training institutes house certified trainers and experienced mentors who provide standard and consistent training. Also, upon the successful completion of the course, a recognised certification is granted to the candidates.
Join an apprenticeship training programme (Optional)
Apprenticeship experience is not a mandatory eligibility requirement for most job profiles. However, having this can increase your candidature exponentially. Recruiters prefer candidates who have worked as an apprentice with any establishment since such candidates have a better understanding of the job responsibilities.
Update your resume and apply for job openings
Job applicants with skill certification and/or apprenticeship experience are much sought-after by recruiters. Irrespective of the industry, employers admit that candidates with skill training and industry experience are always their first choice.
In every industry and private sector, job openings are limited while aspirants apply in a very large number. This increases the competition fiercely and sometimes, makes it a hassle for the employers as well, to pick the most suitable candidates. To fight and win this competition, it is necessary to work on your skillset to strengthen your candidature rather than settling on a lower job profile. For this, check NSDC’s official website today and start working on the same. Utilise your resources upon improving the quality of your application (resume/portfolio) instead of applying in a larger quantity, (i.e. applying to every other job opening). Aim for your dream job, prepare for it well, achieve your goals and do not settle for anything less than that!
