As I wandered the racks of Unclaimed Baggage, a shopping wonderland where the lost bag goes to locate new homes just outside Huntsville, Alabama, I marvelled at the number of Kindles, notebooks, cameras, and yes, even gemstone rings from the display cases. Who were those people who had been packing up their valuables in their checked luggage? Where do they know the TSA principles?
There are just some things you shouldn't ever pack off and risk never seeing again. While a few are obvious (so you would believe ), others are not, so let's begin with the basics.
1. Electronics
Any item of value should never be assessed into the belly of a plane. Little digital cameras, DSLR cameras, video cameras, laptops, Kindles, iPods, cell phones and even portable hard drives are all included in this category. If you'd be sad to lose it, then do not check it. Carry it in a backpack or bag on the plane.
In case you've got these items in your carry-on luggage, and you are asked to test them, then take them out. I unpacked half of a carry-on suitcase to a backpack since I was made to look at my bag. I attempted to explain that it had been filled with camera equipment --that the flight crew didn't care. I pack an Eagle Creek Packable Day Bundle just if I need an excess bag on the road.
2. Makeup
Pack your makeup tote in your carry-on tote, especially for international flights or in case you have multiple connections. Items that are not easily replaced (i.e. which mineral powder it took two years of research to settle eventually) should always be performed on the aeroplane.
3. Jewelry
Costume jewellery aside, in case it's some bling, make sure that your jewellery remains with you. Never take your diamonds off at TSA security and put them through the security screener, or these prized gems may go missing. These items won't put off the metal detector. You are safe to wear engagement rings, gemstone stud earrings, tennis bracelets, bracelets, what are you.
Most recently, the team at Unclaimed Baggage discovered a seven-carat diamond ring in a missing checked bag. Someone packed a gorgeous, very pricey diamond ring they were unable to find again. Don't be that person. We could only assume a man was about to suggest and was trying to keep it a secret. It is wonderful the number of diamond engagement rings find their way to Unclaimed Baggage via assessed bags.
4. Medications
Prescriptions are among the highest items the airline asks you to take out of your carry-on tote when they ask you to check your bag. That can be for a good reason. From the cargo hold, these medications can get too hot, too cold, or they may get misplaced in transit. It's your choice to make sure you have them, not the airline. Keep them with you at all times. The airline cannot separate you from the drugs if they're in your smaller carry-on backpack or handbag.
5. Lovies
Oh, these beloved animals or snuggly loves our children adore. If your kid has a"Froggie" such as mine, then the world will end if it had been lost. Though we have 2, if we arrived at our destination with no one, our trip could be destroyed, and no one would sleep that night. Froggie is a member of our loved ones. You do not assess members of your family in cargo. You take them with love onto the aeroplane. Pack those particular friends in your child's backpack, diaper bag or your bag so that you always know where it is. Our extra"Froggie" is always in my bag for emergencies, while my son carries his own for emergency snuggles during takeoff, landing, and naps on the plane. 6. Baby Gear
Diapers, baby formulation, wipes, in addition to any other necessities, should be thrown into the diaper bag or backpack, and you'll want enough to last you at least 24 to 48 hours. Delays happen. Airports don't always have baby things offered in the shops. Worse, the shops may be closed by the time your flight has been cancelled.
Formula and pacifiers are extremely specific to each child. Don't get stuck because you checked everything you require for your little one on your checked bag. The airline will not always give your luggage back just because your trip got delayed or cancelled, and you need to sleep at a hotel overnight. If your package clever, you won't be stuck with a soggy child and even crankier parents.
7. Change of Clothes
Talking of soggy babies (and their parents), always pack a shift of clothing for the whole family when you fly. You never know when you'll have a diaper collapse, a juice box burst, or someone will experience a bit of air illness on that flight. For each parent who believes they have a child who is the best traveller, there's another parent across the aisle grinning and saying, "I told you so" if the ideal child is throwing up all over their father (it's true).
No matter your child's age, accidents happen. By the time my boys were three months old, I have been peed on, pooped on, spit upon, and entire cups of water/apple juice/ginger ale dumped on me. If you can not stand to overpack, at the very least, pack an extra top. My husband, who has coped with the worst of our kids' injuries in flight, packs a complete wardrobe change, and we pack outfits for the two children.
