Care Tips to Make a Mattress Last Longer

While mattresses are meant to last for years, taking care of it makes it last even longer. Mattresses don’t come cheap and you could definitely save a lot if you don’t need to replace it frequently. There are plenty of factors that affect the lifespan of a mattress aside from its material - from cleaning, usage, maintenance, and many more. How could we make a mattress last longer? Read along and learn more about the essential care tips you should do.

Place a Mattress Protector

Since the mattress is made from absorbent material, one of the ways to care for it is to protect it from moisture and liquids. You can do this by using a mattress protector over it. This is made from a waterproof material that keeps the mattress safe from spills and other liquids. It also keeps allergens and other particles from accumulating in its layers making it easier to maintain a clean bed.

Replace the Beddings Regularly

The beddings accumulate dirt through time – dust, dead skin cells, dust mites, sweat, and many more. This could affect the quality of your sleep especially when the beddings feel dusty or doesn’t smell good anymore. Although everyone has their own preference on how frequent they change the beddings, it is recommended that you get fresh linen sheets at least every two weeks. That way, you can be sure that you’re sleeping in a clean and comfortable bed.

Schedule a Mattress Cleaning

Aside from the beddings, you also need to clean the mattress regularly to remove accumulated dirt in the layers. Even if you’re using a mattress protector, it is still recommended that you vacuum clean it at least once a month. You could also check the mattress for signs of damage or wear during this time, serving a double purpose.

Rotate the Mattress Regularly

The mattress receives regular wear on areas that are frequently used. There are even cases when marks or impressions are formed on the spot where you usually lie down. However, it depends on what material the mattress is made of. There are some mattresses that are made from resilient material which don’t retain pressure marks. Maintain the form of the mattress by rotating it regularly, at least once every 3 months. You could also flip it to the other side regularly for even wear.

Use Support for Mattress

Although mattresses are made to provide support as you lie down in bed, it also requires good support to keep its shape and prevent it from getting worn out quickly. See to it that your bed frame fits the mattress perfectly to support it properly. Fix worn out or saggy box springs for solid support in your mattress.

You could start with good quality mattress to be sure that it will last long. However, you also have to do your part in taking care and maintaining it to reduce regular wear and make it last longer than its expected lifespan.
