The pomegranate has its origin in Persia and from there reached the Mediterranean area through traveling traders. Today it is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions. The Latin name 'Punica' comes from the Phoenicians, a people of antiquity called the Puritans. The second name comes from 'granite', which means kernels or grains.

The pomegranate belongs to the pasture family and is represented by two summer green species, one of which, Punica granatum, is cultivated for its edible fruits. As the German name suggests, this is a tree which, by the way, can live a few hundred years and can reach a height of up to 5 meters. In the countries around the Mediterranean, as well as in India, America, and the Caribbean islands, the pomegranate is often cultivated as a shrub.
The red-brown to gray branches are adorned with opposing, shiny, narrow leaves that can be up to 10 cm long. In spring, bell-shaped, red, orange, light yellow, or even white flowers form, depending on the variety, which, when opened, show a multitude of yellow anthers.
When ripe, the pomegranate is a yellow to red-brownish fruit with a leathery skin. The berry fruits (considered a borderline case of a berry, since the pulp is not fleshy, but also not lignified) usually weigh between 200 and 500 grams.
There are many light-colored seeds, each of which has a soft, fleshy, transparent, pink to dark-red pulp covering. The fruit kernels - the edible thing about the pomegranate - taste sourly sweet to tart and are reminiscent of currants. They are high in fruit acids, sugar, and potassium.
The different pomegranate varieties
The number of pomegranate varieties is excellent. We mainly import the Tendril variety, also known as Mollar, from the USA. Other types are Rabbab, Granada, Spanish Sweet, Early Red, and the dwarf Tavernicht. The main variety in the Canary Islands is called Spanish Ruby. Italian varieties are Dente die Cavallo and Agosto. The cultivation takes place today in particular in the Mediterranean countries such as the USA, Turkey, Israel, Iran, Egypt, and overseas. Boiling the fruit produces a pitch-black ink. The pomegranate's fruit peel was used in India to dye wool in shades of yellow and black.
