The most easterly of the Spanish Canary Islands, Lanzarote is also the fourth largest. Located just 75 miles from Africa, the island enjoys an excellent climate, with temperatures rarely dipping below 20 Celsius, even in the winter.

It is a great destination for those looking for a decent sunshine-filled holiday but at an affordable price – most budget airlines offer daily flights to Lanzarote from most UK airports. There are, of course, some top hotels on the island but travelling on a budget is also very easy too.

Lounging on the beach or by the pool for a week or two is quite achievable but if you would rather be up and doing and/or exploring, Lanzarote has plenty to keep you entertained. You will find all the usual holiday sporting activities such as cycling, golf, trekking and surfing. However, there are also some more unusual sights including volcanoes and green lagoons.

National Park

The Timanfaya National Park is probably Lanzarote’s most popular and most visited tourist attraction. For six years in the 1730s, Lanzarote suffered a major volcanic eruption. Around a quarter of the island’s 326 square miles was covered in lava. The result of this is still visible today with strange lava rocks scattered across some of the landscape. The Timanfaya National Park covers around 30 miles of volcanic style wasteland and it’s an eerie, almost moon-like landscape, which has been used as the backdrop for a number of films. The volcanoes are now dormant and quite safe and visitors flock to the area to enjoy the scenery as well as the craters at the top.

Volcanoes If volcanoes are your thing then a trip to Montana Roja is an absolute must. This large volcanic mountain is located in Playa Blanca. It is well signposted and climbable. The view from the top is stunning and on a clear day, you can easily see the neighbouring Canary Island, Fuerteventura.

Playa Blanca or ‘white beach’ is the southern-most town on the island. It boasts a number of the islands main attractions, including the Green Lagoon or Lago Verde. To see this amazing sight, take a short trip from Playa Blanca out to El Golfo. This is another beach that is actually nestled into the cone of an ancient volcano that has been eroded by the sea. At the foot of the well-worn crater is the Lago Verde, a crescent-shaped lake full of bright green water. The striking colour is created by a unique mixture of volcanic minerals, microorganisms and seawater

Also in the Playa Blanca area is the Marina Rubicon. During the day you can enjoy the shopping that this area affords or perhaps a boat trip. In the evening this place comes into its own with bars and restaurants and great nightlife.

If you have kids to keep amused then the zoo is a hit in any country. The Rancho Texas Park in Puerto del Carmen has a great assortment of animals including white tigers, falcons, seals and turtles. Although you wouldn’t think of it in the UK, take your bathing gear as there are swimming pools dotted around the park where visitors can relax. This is a real day out.

Lanzarote is great for family holidays or even for couples. Great weather, plenty of attractions as well as good nightlife make this a superb destination. Definitely worth considering family holidays to Lanzarote in 2021.
